What is rice bran oil?

Rice grain is the most important food crop in Asia and worldwide. Sixty-four percent of rice grain’s nutritional value is concentrated in the bran and germ, with roughly 60% of that stored in the aleurone layer and the embryo (rice germ). Currently, rice bran oil is extracted from the bran and germ; 150 kilograms of rice grain yield approximately one liter of first-grade rice bran oil. In Japan, Southeast Asia, and Taiwan, it is also known as brown-rice oil, with a long history of research, development, and consumption that continues to accelerate. In the future, rice bran oil will be further refined by separating and extracting the lipid fraction directly from the rice germ. Rice bran oil uniquely contains oryzanol, phytosterols, vitamin E, and other bioactive compounds at levels far exceeding those found in other edible oils. Moreover, rice bran oil has a higher smoke point, making it particularly suitable for stir-frying, deep-frying, and other high-heat cooking methods compared with other household cooking oils.

The History of Rice Bran Oil

Rice bran oil, also known as rice germ oil, is referred to as “brown rice oil” in Japan, Southeast Asian countries, and Taiwan. Rice bran oil originated in Japan. As a nation that highly values rice, Japan benefits from a temperate climate, abundant sunshine, and plentiful rainfall—conditions ideal for rice cultivation. Through centuries of cultivation and improvement, rice has become Japan’s primary staple crop, and rice itself has naturally evolved into the Japanese people’s main food. It is precisely this unwavering dedication and spirit of innovation that Japanese farmers and researchers have brought forth the creation of rice bran oil: extracting the essence and nutrients from the rice bran to produce this refined oil. As a cooking oil, its nutritional content

Nutritional Composition of Rice Bran Oil

During the refined milling of rice, most of the trace nutrients contained in paddy rice are lost along with the removal of the bran. In contrast, rice bran oil is produced from fresh rice bran through scientific extraction and processing, retaining the following key nutritional benefits: 1. It is rich in oryzanol, a nutrient unique to rice bran oil; oryzanol is a potent antioxidant that helps regulate the autonomic nervous system, improve sleep, and effectively relieve fatigue. 2. It is abundant in phytosterols, which help reduce the body’s absorption of cholesterol. 3. It is high in natural vitamin E (tocotrienols), which boasts strong antioxidant properties. 4. The Amazing Benefits of Rice Bran Oil

1. It boasts the most balanced fatty acid profile and is hailed as “heart oil” and “youth oil.” 2. Rich in oryzanol, vitamin E, tocotrienols, campesterol, and other natural bioactive compounds, it helps lower blood lipids, regulate autonomic nervous function in the brain, and combat aging. 3. It has a high smoke point and excellent oxidative stability, significantly reducing smoke formation compared with other edible oils. 4. It offers a mild flavor and a bright, clear color, helping to preserve the natural taste and vibrant appearance of dishes. 5. With low viscosity, cooking with it can reduce oil absorption by up to 20%, greatly enhancing food freshness and shelf life; moreover, rice bran oil produces fewer harmful byproducts during cooking than other edible oils.
