The Development of the Rice Oil Industry Is of Profound Significance and Great Value (Part 1)

Reason for attention: Rice bran (which includes the rice germ) is a byproduct of rice milling. It is not only rich in fats but also packed with a wide array of nutrients, making it a high-quality oilseed resource. Typically, rice bran contains 18% to 20% oil—on par with the oil content of Chinese soybeans. If 70% of China’s rice-bran resources from rice milling were utilized for oil extraction, and assuming an oil yield of 15% to 16%, China could produce roughly 1.5 million metric tons of rice bran oil annually. Based on current annual domestic edible-oil consumption, this would boost self-sufficiency by 3.5 percentage points—equivalent to the oil output from more than 9 million metric tons of domestically produced soybeans—making rice bran oil an exceptionally valuable oilseed resource. So, what bottlenecks must be overcome to achieve green, high-quality development of the rice-bran-oil industry? Recently, Wang Ruiyuan, Honorary Chairman of the Oilseed Industry Branch of the China Association of Agricultural Industrialization Leading Enterprises, Chief Expert for Policy Consultation at the China Association for Science and Technology, and former President of Zhonggu Grain & Oil Group, provided an analysis on this issue.

Saving Grain and Reducing Loss | Where Do Losses Typically Occur in Rice Processing?

Rice grains consist of the husk, pericarp, embryo, and endosperm. The main processing steps for paddy rice are cleaning, hulling, and milling. Paddy cleaning is carried out to remove impurities such as sand, gravel, metal fragments, and weed seeds; hulling involves removing the outer husk to produce brown rice; and milling entails stripping away the bran layer from brown rice to produce milled rice with superior eating quality.

Nutritional Value of Rice Bran

Rice bran oil has a well-balanced unsaturated fatty acid profile, with linoleic acid accounting for 38% and oleic acid for 42%, yielding a ratio of approximately 1:1.1—a proportion that aligns with the optimal ratio recommended by the World Health Organization. Linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid that the human body cannot synthesize on its own yet is indispensable. It performs numerous physiological functions, notably by participating in phospholipid synthesis and serving as a key component of mitochondrial and cellular membranes in phospholipid form; it also promotes cholesterol and lipid metabolism, lowers blood cholesterol levels, and helps prevent atherosclerosis. Furthermore, linoleic acid serves as a precursor for prostaglandins, which regulate vascular tone through vasodilation and vasoconstriction, facilitate nerve impulse transmission, and protect the skin from radiation-induced damage.

Why choose rice bran oil? China Oilseed Industry Association

When it comes to rice bran oil, it is a type of oil that remains relatively unfamiliar compared with soybean oil—yet in recent years it has gradually risen to mainstream status. As consumer spending power increases and oil-extraction technologies continue to advance, an ever-growing array of oils has emerged. Recently, the “Comprehensive Survey + Think Tank Establishment” research team for the rice bran oil industry, initiated by the Oilseed Industry Branch of the China Association of Agricultural Industrialization Leading Enterprises, embarked on a tour of Northeast China, visiting seven key enterprises to gain an in-depth understanding of market demand: Why are consumers choosing rice bran oil? And why is the industry so optimistic about its future prospects?
